Content with Covid

8 months deep into this pandemic and almost 13 million people have been diagnosed with Coronavirus in the USA. Chances are you have met someone(s) who has survived Coronavirus and lived to tell their tale. One of the many things that is so baffling about this novel virus is the spectrum of symptoms… from being asymptomatic and not even knowing one has it – to ultimately death, and everything in-between (have you seen the ever growing list of “Coronavirus symptoms”?).

Well, I was speaking with a friend the other day who is still recuperating from it, weeks later. Once he started feeling sick, he quarantined and as he said, “it knocked him off his feet for 11 days”. He was explaining to me that this virus snuck up on him slowly for a couple days, he thought it was allergies or something, then it hit him hard with body aches and the “typical” symptoms; fever, loss of taste & smell, and major fatigue – which put him in bed for 9 days! As he was describing his experience he said something that really stood out to me, he said “I was really content”… wait… WHAT?! Content with Covid?! Seems like an oxymoron. I hadn’t hear THAT story before. BUT, it was in that time – that he rested, and prayed. He used this time to strengthen his spirituality. He talked to God. He reflected on the whirlwind of his life this past year. He read Scripture. He didn’t turn on the TV and mindlessly waste his time away. He prayed; fell asleep praying, and woke up to continue praying again – he was STILL, in the comfort of God.

“Be still and know that I am God”

Psalm 46:10

WOW! When was the last time that you had days on end to just… be. To pray, and reflect, and worship, and read, and… just be? Although he wasn’t feeling his best; he was fatigued, quarantined to his room, in bed – but he used this time, this life circumstance, to get closer to God.

What an incredible opportunity to live out Psalm 23:1-4

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the darkest valley,
I will fear no evil, for you are with me;
your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

His soul was refreshed as he laid in bed, in the green pastures of his life and was led along the quiet waters of this quarantined circumstance, for God’s sake. He walked through the dark valley of the unknown, but he had no fear, God was with him, comforting him through all his isolated days. He was praying, full of gratitude with the peace of God – even through the Coronavirus.

So I end this with a thought… what if WE ALL used this time to live out Psalm 23? For the millions more who will inevitably battle this highly contagious virus – what if we used that time productively to pray. ask. seek. knock…. be still. 99.8ish% of people survive this, and it CAN make you stronger because of it. And for ALL THE PEOPLE who aren’t even sick who will have to quarantine from being exposed to Coronavirus – what a unique gift we could take, using the time productively to strengthen our spiritual life; crack open our bible, dig in, read, pray, ask, seek, knock… and you know what? God promises us that if we ask, we WILL receive. If we seek Him, we WILL find Him. If we knock, the door WILL be opened for us. Let’s learn to be content with Coronavirus, or any life circumstance for that matter – even when we do have to walk through the darkest valley, He is always there for us.
