Sitting in the Unknown

Today. The day after Good Friday, and the day before Easter, was a very dark and uncertain time in history. Over 2000 years ago Jesus was crucified on the cross on “Good Friday”, dying for your and my sins as the ultimate sacrifice – God’s unimaginable gift of grace extended to each of us, if we take it. Tomorrow, Jesus is resurrected, brought back to life as the biggest miracle ever to take place; the light was revealed and many questions began to be answered. But the day between those incredibly historic events, was dark. There was uncertainty… How could this happen if He is the Messiah? What does this all mean? Now what? What do they do without their leader/teacher? His followers didn’t really realize what was happening, especially through the darkness of this day, and they mourned! They mourned for Jesus, and I’m sure they all just wanted life “like it was before”… little did they know how INCREDIBLE it was all going to be.

Easter is such a beautiful time, where it seems like the whole country celebrates Jesus! Good Friday, Lent, Holy Week, Passover… so many symbolic traditions leading up to this big day – but the day before, is darkness. And it has me thinking about TODAY – literally, Saturday, April 11, 2020… sitting in the unknown. There are so many uncertainties about life these days that the whole COUNTRY is experiencing together – it’s really quite an incredible phenomenon if you think about it.  This “invisible enemy”, the unknown of WHO has it, or WHAT is contaminated by it: Codvid-19 has taken our country into a rabbit-hole of unknowns, and sometimes I find my mind swirling with it all. What’s going to happen with my kids’ school? How am I going to balance work from home and homeschool? What’s going to happen with my husband’s job? How is the economy going to be when this all subsides? WHEN is this all going to subside? How are the at-risk children who live in abusive homes doing? How are the mentally-ill doing with all these “germs” and sickness going around? How are the single people doing being so isolated? How is life going to reemerge after this “social distancing” order is lifted? How is politics playing into all of this? Wait… is this a conspiracy? Is this the beginning of the New World Order? Is this “stay at home order” going to last into the summer? Is this going to linger and/or reemerge through next year? Am I going to run out of toilet paper?… and on and on and on – really!

I don’t know about you, but living in the unknown can feel unsettling, sometimes fearful, sometimes overwhelming. We’re human – how can it not? BUT, there is such an incredible caveat that plays in here – those of us who believe in Jesus, God, the Sovereign Creator… we don’t have to worry 1 day about it all.

“He said to them: It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive the power when the Holy Spirit comes on you and you will be my witnesses …to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:7-8

We have so many tools to help guide us through this time, here are 3 foundational things than can help you through this time of uncertainty, as it’s helped me…

#1 – Holy Spirit! We need to incorporate that power each and every day to help ground us, guide us and be a witness for Him – especially through dark times! How do we do that? Well, I think that could be another blog post another day (if you’re interested), but if we’re walking with the Lord each and every day, we’ll be living in the Spirit. “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.” Romans 15:13

#2 – Faith! Some people are blessed with the gift of faith, and it comes easy for them, others do not have that gift and have to work harder at it – but that does not mean you shouldn’t have faith… for “we walk by faith, not by sight” 2 Cor 5:7

#3 – Scripture! As followers of Jesus, we should be reading God’s word regularly! It teaches us, inspires, gives us peace and understanding, strengthens faith, convicts to correct us, heals… the list is endless!  “My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Let them not escape from your sight; keep them within your heart. For they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh. Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.” Proverbs 4:20-23 (PS – If you don’t have a bible and are curious & would like one – I’d love to send you one, Contact Me and let me know – I’ll mail one out to you ASAP)

If you think about it – it all really doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things… we serve an almighty God who will work out all things for His good, in the meantime, let’s live our lives with …faith, hope and love – but the greatest of these is love! 1 Cor 13:13
